What makes a great startup name?
The strongest startup names share four traits: they're short (one or two syllables, two words max), distinctive (not descriptive of the product category), pronounceable on the first try, and available as a .com. Think Stripe, Notion, Figma, Linear, Vercel — none of those names tell you what the product does, but all of them are easy to say, spell, and remember.
How investors evaluate your name
Most VCs say the name doesn't matter — and then quietly admit they remember the founders with the cleanest names first. A weak name forces you to spend pitch meetings explaining the spelling. A strong name disappears into the background so the product can shine. If your candidate fails the "phone test" (can a stranger spell it after hearing it once?), keep generating.
Patterns that work for startups
- Invented words: Spotify, Kodak, Verizon. Maximum trademark protection.
- Real words used metaphorically: Stripe, Slack, Lattice, Ramp.
- Latin / Greek roots: popular in fintech (Plaid, Brex) and biotech.
- Two-syllable blends: Notion, Linear, Vercel, Pylon.
